Four times world champion aims for Olympic Gold

Heulwen’s colleagues in the service department already knew of the twenty year old’s impressive track record. In 1998 the blonde black belt won the World Junior Championships. In 2002 she came third in the Women’s World Championships and in 2003 she collected the world champion’s gold medal in the under 65 kg class, staged by the World Kickboxing Association.

Training takes up a large part of Heulwen’s day. After finishing her desk job at MONO she sets off for her club in Llanelli where she is an instructor. After an hour of teaching other aspiring kickboxers of all ages she does two more hours of vigorous training herself. Close to a championship the training sessions ramp up from five days a week to seven days a week! Heulwen’s mum, Wendy, is quite handy at the sport as well. The forty-six year old also bought a gold medal home from Corfu - as world champion in the ‘veterans’ class!

What’s left for Heulwen to achieve in her chosen sport? ‘Kickboxing is not yet an Olympic event’, she explained, ‘but we are very hopeful that the 2008 games in Beijing will be the fist time that our sport will be represented - that’s what I’m aiming for - Olympic Gold’.

It came as no surprise to people at MONO when they heard that the pretty, five foot two inch office administrator working in customer service department is a world champion kick-boxer.

Heulwen Evans, who lives in Llanelli, is one of four sisters, three of whom have excelled at the sport, but Heulwen’s record will take some beating having just returned from Corfu after winning two gold medals in the world championships organised by the World Professional Kickboxing Association. Her medals are for the ‘light contact’ and ‘semi-contact’ sections of the championships.
